PERSONALITY:

Very little is known about Carlos' life before the incident in Racoon City, though it is stated that before being scouted by the Umbrella Corporation he was involved in a Communist guerrilla organisation somewhere in Latin America that was wiped out by government forces. It can be likely gleaned from this small snippet of information and his given age that he was more or less raised in and around violence, likely starting with the guerrilla forces fairly young.

A situation that would usually have dire effects on most people's psyches, Carlos refused to let such things make him jaded and cynical, instead adopting a playful, flirtatious personality. Even in the midst of a zombie outbreak, having witnessed the decimation of the other U.B.C.S teams and facing down Nemesis for the first time he still found it in him to crack jokes about the beast being "persistent" and asking Jill if she "liked that in a man". He was boldly flirting with her over the radio while they were seperated, though both being rebuffed and seeing what Jill was capable of did eventually lead him to toning it down and being more respectful towards her. She was handling herself better than entire platoons of soldiers and it didn't take long for him to understand that she was not a force to be reckoned with.

Of course as with anyone in his line of work being all jokes all the time wouldn't fly, especially with his much more serious commanding officer Mikhail, and he knows when it's time to buckle down and do his job. He takes orders without hesitation but is also more than able to take control of a situation if it comes down to that. He's smart, quick thinking even when bullets are flying and zombies are shuffling toward him. He's generally optimistic even in the most trying of times, but also realistic enough as to not think that he can simply shoot his way out of every problem.

He is brave and willing to throw himself into danger if that's what it takes to save others. He cares about people, even ones he barely knows, with the clear intent of his joining the factions he has being to help people in trouble. He is intently focused on that one goal upon being deployed to Racoon City, so much so that he isn't even aware of what Umbrella has been upto behind the scenes or how deep their involvement in the outbreak goes.

Which is not to say that he's oblivious - he was simply not informed and his orders were seemingly cut and dry enough that he didn't think to question any further. Being rather low on the ladder of command also meant that any question would have been either ignored outright or deflected, and it was hinted that his CO didn't even know the breadth of Umbrella's involvement either. Even if he did know chances are incredibly high he would have remained focused on attempting to evacuate civilians anyway. It's simply what he does, someone who would reach out a hand to pull someone out of a sinkhole even if it meant losing his own grip in the process.

This bravery and kindness, though liable to get him in trouble, never seems to waiver despite everything he sees and experiences. He constantly has Jill's back throughout the events of the game, does everything he can to keep her alive, even searching for hours for her and risking his life through the hospital in order to find a cure for her after she was infected by Nemesis.

Losing Mikhail and the other passengers on the train was deeply upsetting to him, as was learning that Nikolai was a traitor in their own ranks, but he didn't let those feelings slow him down as he knew nothing could be done and that their own survival was what he had to focus on. His reaction to loss may seem almost cold to others but it is unfortunately something he had to come to grips with early in his life and something he knows he can't dwell on if he wants to keep living himself.

One of the key differences between the 2020 version and the original release version of Carlos is that about midway through the original he does lose hope and gives into the despair of having lost his entire platoon, claiming that he "can't handle it" and foolishly running off from Jill for a short time. He does quickly bounce back, though, continuing to look for a way to escape the city even when it appeared that the odds were absolutely against them. The rest of the differences between the two are minor at best, mostly toned down flirting after about an hour or so into the game and a stronger sense of maturity overall. His humor, kindness, flirtatious nature, overall optimism and strong desire to help others remains intact.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Carlos is a relatively normal human male who, while obviously in great physical shape and health has nothing remarkable or supernatural about him. He does, however, have some unique skills due to both his time as a guerilla soldier and within the U.B.C.S. special ops unit.

🔧 Guerrilla tactics
Guerrilla warfare is defined as "irregular warfare", a competition between opponents of unequal strength, often fronted by organized but ill-equipped paramilitary individuals who are fighting for a specific cause but doing so via much smaller numbers and whatever equipment they can get their hands on. Given Carlos' past it would make sense that he has experience in picking up whatever is available to use as a weapon and employ whatever tactics it takes to win in a dangerous combat situation. Improvised explosive devices, methods for destroying infrastructure and other methods to turn the tide in the direction of normally weaker forces were likely used along with other less than savory moves such as using children in their ranks (of which he was likely one) and refugees as weapons. The latter of these are not likely to be something Carlos himself would willingly turn to, even in the most dire of times, as his desire to be involved in either group - guerrilla or Umbrella forces - seems to stem more from a want to help and rescue, not harm.

🔧 Heavy weaponry
Carlos is initially equipped with a CQBR Assault Rifle (M4A1 carbine in the original), a rapid fire, large caliber rifle considered to be 'heavy artillery'. With a high recoil it is not an easy gun to master but Carlos is never seen struggling with it. He also makes his first appearance in the remake with a large rocket launcher that is discarded rather quickly after facing down Nemesis and using the remaining rounds. It is indicated that he was initially recruited because of his heavy weapon skills, leading one to believe that he has more than likely been using them for quite some time even before Umbrella picked him up.

🔧 General marksman
Carlos also makes use of a general Glock pistol and, as with the rifle and other weaponry, shows little difficulty with it. He generally has a good aim and can deal with moving targets with a high degree of accuracy.

🔧 Vehicle maintenance
The other skill that earned being scouted by Umbrella was stated to be vehicle maintenance. This isn't something that comes into play much in the games save for looking for parts to repair the cable car in the original. It would be fair to assume, though, that if he was recruited for that reason in particular he is very adept at it.

🔧 Agility/hand to hand
As with most soldiers Carlos has had training in hand to hand combat as well as generally being fairly agile for his size. One wouldn't call him super adept (though we only really view any sort of 'fisticuffs' in the last moments of the remake) but he has enough training to be able to subdue an enemy and get them in a headlock.

INVENTORY:
🎒 Modified CQBR Assault Rifle (50 rounds, scope, tactical grip, dual magazine)
🎒 Glock 18 Handgun (30 rounds)
🎒 Combat Knife
🎒 Flash grenade (x4)
🎒 Tactical Vest
